Thunder Bay Family Network seeks to build natural circles of supports around individuals with disabilities and provides networking opportunities for individuals and families. What began as a group of parents coming together in 1999 seeking a new way to support their sons and daughters with a disability, has now grown into a Board of Directors made up of families and interested individuals looking to build a new story in Thunder Bay. New story initiatives provide innovative ways of supporting people to be participants in and contributors to their communities. Families networking together and supporting one another provide strength, hope, inspiration, and understanding. Families have the resilience, experience, and expertise to support each other in addressing challenges. The process of planning and providing the tools for a good life for individuals with disabilities can seem overwhelming. Thunder Bay Family Network can provide support and resources that will assist families in achieving peace of mind.
Our ICAN! program (Independence, Confidence, Achievements, Networking) provides an opportunity for individuals with a disability, over the age of twelve, to network, establish friendships, and have fun. The program runs one evening per week and includes activities such as karaoke, cheerleading, crafts, baking, games, music, and line dancing. Family members and community friends are always welcome to pop into ICAN and join in the fun or spend some time networking with other families.
Beyond Graduation is a workshop designed for individuals with disabilities, and their families, who are about to graduate or have graduated recently. Whether finding a job or planning other activites that help move a young person towards independence and community involvement, this time of life involves many changes. This workshop aims to provide some support and information to assist families in navigating through these decisions. Watch for more information on upcoming workshops.
